Making Waves in Water Safety and Equity with Sea Scope Inc.

In today’s corporate landscape, fostering equity is not just about workplace diversity; it’s also about giving back to the community in lasting ways. One organization leading this charge in Indianapolis is Sea Scope Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to equipping residents of marginalized communities, especially minority youth, with water safety skills and introducing them to career pathways in aquatics, science, and marine conservation. For businesses committed to making a difference, Sea Scope Inc. offers several opportunities for engagement, from donations to corporate volunteerism and board participation.

Why Water Safety and Marine Science Matter

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1-14 and greater among communities where access to water safety education and swimming lessons is often limited. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Black children drown at a rate nearly eight times higher than their white peers. This alarming statistic underscores the importance of Sea Scope’s mission: ensuring equitable access to water safety education while also opening doors to careers within aquatics spaces, including marine science and conservation—fields historically lacking diversity.

Through hands-on, immersive experiences, Sea Scope Inc. teaches kids how to be safe in and around water and helps them envision future careers in industries they may have never considered. These skills not only save lives but create job opportunities that can significantly change the course of these young people’s futures, particularly those from marginalized communities.

How the Corporate Community Can Support Sea Scope Inc’s Mission

Companies in Indianapolis have a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference by supporting Sea Scope’s efforts. Here’s how businesses can get involved:

  1. Donations and Sponsorships: Financial contributions are critical for keeping Sea Scope’s impact on the rise. Your corporate donations can transform lives by supporting the decrease in drowning rates through basic life skills (water safety training) and economic equity through training that could lead to the acquisition of jobs.
  2. Corporate Volunteerism: Encourage your employees to participate in volunteer days with Sea Scope Inc. From assisting with water safety clinics to assisting with community engagement projects centered around environmental awareness, volunteer involvement directly supports the organization’s mission while providing team-building opportunities for your staff.
  3. Board Participation: Sea Scope Inc. is always looking for passionate, equity-minded leaders to serve on its board of directors. By lending your expertise, you can help shape the future of an organization that is not only saving lives but also changing the trajectory of minority students through career opportunities in STEM fields.

A Lifesaving and World-Changing Mission

Dr. Allyson Brown, the founder of Sea Scope Inc., started this initiative to bridge the gap in ocean literacy and access to aquatics activities for underrepresented communities. Her passion for the water stems from the personal peace she found in connecting with the water, which sparked her desire to ensure that black and brown youth have the same access to opportunities and skill development to thrive in aquatics fields.

“The ocean offered me peace and a sense of calm that I wasn’t introduced to as a child growing up in Indiana. Many minority youth don’t have access to this underwater world, and that’s what Sea Scope Inc. is changing,” says Dr. Brown.

Sea Scope Inc. programs go beyond teaching basic swimming skills. Students gain certifications in scuba diving and even lifeguarding for those who are eligible, opening doors to careers they may have never imagined. These skills are not only valuable locally, considering the city’s lifeguard shortage each year, but also create new job opportunities in industries that are in desperate need of new and highly trained individuals, regardless of race and place. The global environmental crisis is not only in need of traditional science-degreed individuals but is also in need of citizen scientists to address the issues of our ocean planet.

Building a Stronger, More Inclusive Future

By supporting Sea Scope Inc., companies are not just contributing to reducing drowning rates—they’re helping create pathways for minority youth to enter careers in STEM fields, especially those associated with environmental science. This work has the potential to transform lives, close the equity gap, and diversify industries that need this new, diverse breed of environmental stewards and activists.

Sea Scope Inc. is making waves both locally and globally. The organization partners with national organizations such as Diving with a Purpose and works on global initiatives focused on marine protected areas, pollution reduction, and marine conservation, giving students real-world experience through engagement of various projects. These efforts help students understand the critical connection between their local impact on global ecosystems.

By becoming a corporate partner or supporting Sea Scope Inc. through board service, volunteerism, or sponsorships and donations, your company can play a vital role in building a safer, more inclusive future—one that ensures every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to thrive while contributing to the health of our planet.
