As women continue to play a pivotal role in reshaping the workforce, the need for greater corporate support has never been more critical. This is especially true in Central Indiana, where the advancement of women in the workplace presents a significant opportunity for equity and economic growth. The upcoming WE Brunch, scheduled for October 6, 2024, is more than just an event—it’s a call to action for businesses and organizations to invest in creating an inclusive and equitable work environment for women.
The Current Landscape: Progress and Challenges
The numbers tell a compelling story. According to the Independent Women’s Forum, women’s labor force participation rate was 57.5% in January 2024, a figure that remains below pre-pandemic levels. Yet, despite this dip, women have made significant strides in educational attainment and economic contribution. Nearly half of women ages 25 to 64 now hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, a dramatic increase from previous decades. Moreover, women comprise 35% of workers in the U.S.’s 10 highest-paying occupations, up from just 13% in 1980.
Women-owned businesses have also become a driving force in the economy, generating $2.7 trillion annually. Between 2019 and 2023, women added 1.7 million new firms, $579.6 billion in revenue, and 1.4 million jobs to the U.S. economy. These accomplishments underscore the undeniable impact of women in the workforce, yet they also highlight the ongoing need for corporate support to sustain and accelerate this progress.
The Role of Corporate Support in Advancing Equity
Amanda L. Bonilla, co-founder of WE Brunch, emphasizes the critical role that businesses play in fostering an equitable workplace. “Corporate support is not just about providing opportunities; it’s about creating a culture where women of all backgrounds can thrive,” says Bonilla. “By investing in policies and practices such as paid family leave, flexible work locations or time options and annual wage gap analysis, companies in Central Indiana have the chance to lead the way in setting a new standard for workplace equity.”
WE Brunch: A Platform for Change
The WE Brunch event in October offers a unique platform to advance these conversations and foster connections among women who are committed to equity in Central Indiana. With the support of sponsors like the Business Equity for Indy (BEI), the event is poised to make a significant impact. BEI member companies are encouraged to purchase tickets and attend the event, where they will have the opportunity to engage with women leaders from various sectors and learn how to better support and uplift women in their own organizations.
“Inclusive environments where women of all ages, ethnicities, and career levels can connect are essential for driving progress,” notes Doneisha Posey, co-founder, WE Brunch. “When women feel supported and empowered, they are more likely to contribute to their fullest potential, benefiting not only themselves but also their organizations and the broader community.”
A Call to Action for Central Indiana Businesses
As the date for WE Brunch approaches, businesses in Central Indiana are urged to recognize the vital role they play in supporting and retaining women in the workforce. By participating in events like WE Brunch and implementing inclusive policies, companies can help close the equity gap and create a more prosperous future for all.
The future of Central Indiana’s workforce depends on the actions we take today to support and uplift women. With corporate backing and a collective commitment to equity, we can ensure that women of all backgrounds have the opportunity to succeed and contribute to a thriving economy. The WE Brunch is not just an event—it’s a movement towards a more inclusive and equitable workplace for all.
