Hiring and Promotion
Eliminate hurdles to increase equity and inclusion in Indy's workforce.
BEI works to increase the equity and diversity of Indianapolis’ workforce by eliminating and reducing hurdles to Black entry, advancement, and promotion. Additionally, we strive to encourage pathways to economic stability across Indy’s employers and corporate board rooms.
Economic inequality adversely affects people more than just financially. It impacts public health, mental health, educational attainment, social mobility, the criminal justice system, and historically has led to increased sociopolitical unrest.

Hiring and Promotion
Focus Areas
- Resources and benchmarks for diversifying an organization’s talent pipeline, targeted recruitment efforts for hiring diverse talent, supportive wrap-around services and benefits for employees of color to remove barriers to recruitment and retention of talent, professional and personal mentorship opportunities, and access to training and development programs (including apprenticeship programs).
- A Brookings Institution’s report Advancing Opportunity in Central Indiana determined the rate of family-sustaining wages for Central Indiana families is a regionally adjusted $18.00/hour, plus employer-sponsored health benefits. Employers can leverage the findings in this report in evaluating internally for compensation, benefits, and access to services that support workers of color.
